Cloverdale Annual Juried Sculpture Exhibit 2008

Meet the Judges, Sixth Annual Cloverdale Sculpture Exhibit

The judges for this year’s 6th Annual Cloverdale Sculpture Exhibit were Edwin Hamilton, Debra LeHane, and Steve Oliver. The judges launched the exhibit with an opening reception in the Plaza on June 7th. At that event they selected Making Space for the Future by Gale Wagner as Best of Show, and Posing Kinetic by Mark Oldland for Honorable Mention.

Our judges had a big challenge in designating only two awards from amongst the 14 fine sculptures on exhibit.  However, each is a highly qualified arts connoisseur:

  • Edwin Hamilton began his career as a stonemason and sculptor in 1984, and has completed many public art projects including the Library Terrace Garden at Strybing Arboretum in San Francisco and a piece in the Huntington Botanical Gardens in Pasadena, CA. He has completed numerous residential and public projects for noted architects, and had a recent solo exhibit of sculpture at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art (2005-06). He is currently working on the design and construction of the Rhododendron pavilion at the San Francisco Botanical Garden.

  • Debra LeHane built the Civic Art Collection Program on behalf of the San Francisco Arts Commission. This program has responsibility for the cataloguing, care and preservation of public art belonging to the City and County of San Francisco. She is particularly proud of the conservation program she implemented for the Arts Commission where historic monuments such as Lotta's Fountain, the Buddha in Golden Gate Park, and numerous other monuments were conserved and restored, as well as the fresco murals in Coit Tower and the historic Beach Chalet at Ocean Beach.

  • Steve Oliver is the owner of a 100-acre Alexander Valley ranch that has become one of the premier private reserves for site-specific art in the United States. Since 1985, Steve Oliver and his wife Nancy have assembled at their ranch one of the most ambitious private collections of site-specific sculpture in the United States. When Oliver and his wife became frustrated at the increasing commercialization of art, they decided to take a more proactive approach to encouraging "art for art's sake" and commissioned site-specific work that could neither be moved nor sold. Now more than 20 artists from around the world are featured at the Oliver Ranch collection and the ranch is designated to become a public trust, preserving the vision of Steven and Nancy for generations to come.. The Cloverdale Arts Alliance has twice sponsored private tours from Steve Oliver of this jewel.
